Doctors Reveal: Does Drinking Coffee Every Morning Really Cause Harm? — Not Really!
Every morning, millions of people begin their day with a steaming cup of coffee. The soothing aroma, the burst of energy… coffee has become a cherished ritual. But how many cups does it take before this indulgence becomes harmful? Doctors are sounding the alarm, but they also emphasize that when consumed in moderation, coffee can actually be beneficial.
Why is Coffee Good for Your Health?
According to Dr. Leana Wen, an emergency medicine physician and professor at George Washington University, “The evidence is clear: moderate coffee consumption is linked to a reduced risk of certain chronic diseases.”
Numerous studies confirm that moderate coffee consumption can:
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease
- Lower the risk of type 2 diabetes
- Protect against certain cancers and dementia
Coffee is packed with antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds that support the immune system and protect cells. Additionally, some ingredients help improve insulin sensitivity and stabilize blood sugar levels.
But Be Careful with Excess
Too much caffeine can have the opposite effect. According to ANSES (the French Agency for Food Safety, Environment, and Occupational Health), around 30% of adults and 11% of children in France consume more caffeine than the recommended daily dose. This can lead to:
- Heart palpitations and anxiety
- Nervousness and agitation
- Sleep disturbances
- Long-term effects on the cardiovascular system and bones
Certain groups are more sensitive to caffeine, including pregnant women, children, and individuals taking heart or anti-anxiety medications.
What is the Ideal Daily Dose of Coffee?
Dr. Wen recommends that “up to 400 mg of caffeine per day—roughly the amount in four cups of filtered coffee—is a safe dose for most adults.”
This equates to approximately:
- 4 cups of filter coffee
- 3 espressos
- 2 large American-style coffees
Beyond this, the risk of side effects increases, including tremors, irritability, and insomnia.
