Scotch Rose (Rosa spinosissima)

Rosa spinossima is one of our native roses. It's known as the Scotch rose because it was adopted by the Brown Brothers of Perth, who bred a range of varieties from the native plant. These were all the rage in the early 19th century before they fell out of fashion.

The native Scotch rose occurs naturally across the UK. You don't need to be a classicist to understand one of its differentiating features! They're tolerant of a wide range of conditions, hardy and - because of their thorns - pretty rabbit proof. Given their suckering tendency as well, and you have a really helpful hedge plant, often grown as a low growing single species hedge. Unlike some of our other native roses they have a pretty compact habit, only growing to around 1m. Rosa spinossima has attractive fern like foliage, single scented creamy white flowers, and produces black hips.

Like all the native trees and shrubs we sell, our Scotch roses are grown in the UK from UK origin seed. We sell 2 year old 60-90cm plants, in multiples of 5.
