Cillian Murphy Plays Thomas Shelby

Thomas Tommy Shelby is the leader of the infamous Peaky Blinders gang, but for all of his clever and cunning schemes, he has his own issues that he's dealing with. He's determined to have success, wealth, and security for himself and his family at any cost.

Besides Peaky Blinders, you might have seen Cillian Murphy in The Dark Knight Rises, Inception, and Dunkirk.

Helen McCrory Plays Polly Gray

Polly Gray is the badass matriarch running the Shelby family, despite what her nephew Tommy might think. She's the boss. Gray ran the family business while her nephews were away fighting in World War I and now she helps Tommy make sure the best interests of the family are protected in all their legitimate and illegitimate business dealings.

Helen McCrory is as badass as her Peaky Blinders character. She played Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter series, Rosanna Calvierri in Dr. Who, as well as starring in the television mini-series rendition of Anna Karenina.

Paul Anderson Plays Arthur Shelby

At the end of season 4, we all thought Arthur Shelby was dead, but much to our surprise and relief, he was alive and well and just in the middle of a clever revenge plot — as you do. The eldest brother of the Shelby family, Arthur is deeply involved in the family business, but untraditionally, he does not run it. He is, however, Tommy's right-hand man and would never let his family get into a fight without him.

You might have seen Paul Anderson in Dr. Who, The Revenant, or the 2018 version of Robin Hood.

Sophie Rundle Plays Ada Thorne

Born a Shelby, Ada Thorne has spent much of the series trying to distance herself from her family and their unscrupulous dealings. She became passionate about communism and got married to someone who didn't make a living out of crime. After her husband, Freddie Thorne died leaving her and their song Karl (named after Karl Marx), Ada returned to her roots with a catch: she only wants to be involved in the Shelby Company's legitimate businesses.

Sophie Rundle played Vicky Budd in one of our other favorite, bingeable series, The Bodyguard.

Natasha O’Keeffe

Plays Lizzie Shelby

We first met her as Lizzie Stark, but we now know her as Lizzie Shelby, Tommy's second wife. How she became his wife was a bit of a muddled affair. While working as a sex worker, she became engaged to John Shelby before the engagement was called off when Tommy told his younger brother that he also knew her as one of her repeat clients. Tommy then later married her after his first wife, Grace, died. Now, she works at the Shelby Company as a secretary while raising her and Tommy's child, Ruby.

Natasha O'Keeffe's other big role you might know her for is playing Abbey Smith in Misfits.

Harry Kirton Plays Finn Shelby

Finn Shelby is the baby of the crime family. Unlike his three older brothers, Arthur, Tommy, and John, he wasn't old enough to fight the first World War. We've seen him in the background in previous seasons, but he is just starting to come into his own.

Harry Kirton has been in a couple of independent films, but much like his character, he is just starting to find his career.

Neil Maskell

Plays Winston Churchill

Perhaps the most obvious real-life character involved in the Peaky Blinders, Winston Churchill has appeared throughout the series since the very beginning. He wasn't the Prime Minister yet. At the time, he was already over 20 years into his political career and working as the Secretary of State for the Colonies.

Neil Maskell also played DI Pete Drummond on the Channel 4 series, Humans.

Andrew Koji Plays Brilliant Chang

Brilliant Chang is new to season 5. A Chinese businessman and drug dealer, Chang is based on a real man named Brilliant Chang who, at the time, was considered the Dope King of London. He has a deal in mind for Tommy Shelby, but naturally, anyone that wants to work with the Shelbys, trouble follows shortly behind.

Andrew Koji is known for his roles in Call the Midwife and The Innocents.

Benjamin Zephaniah

Plays Jeremiah Jesus

Jeremiah Jesus has been a longtime friend of the Shelby family since the beginning. He is an Afro-Caribbean preacher who fought alongside all three of the older Shelby brothers in World War I. He is basically family at this point. His son, Isaiah, is a close friend of the younger Shelbys and is already working his way up the ranks of the Peaky Blinders.

Benjamin Zephaniah has been appearing in TV shows since the 1990s but is best known for appearances on British talk shows, The One Show and Question Time.

Charlene McKenna

Plays Captain Swing

Another new character to season 5, Captain Swing is an IRA leader who kidnaps Michael Gray on his way home from Boston to Birmingham at the start of the season. Swing has reason to believe that Michael has betrayed the Peaky Blinders and colluded with a rival gang. She believes having Tommy Shelby, a new local politician, on her side will prove useful. In order to do that, she must prove her loyalty and do him a favor.

Charlene McKenna has appeared in both Ripper Street as Rose Erskine and Death and Nightingales as Mercy Boyle.
