From insecure teen to royal TV star — she nearly died after giving birth

Long before royal headlines followed her every move, Meghan Markle was simply a young girl growing up in Los Angeles trying to understand where she belonged. Her childhood was far from glamorous and often consisted of quiet afternoons at home and simple meals after school. Born to an African American mother, Doria Ragland, and a Caucasian father, Thomas Markle Sr., Meghan grew up navigating questions about identity from an early age. She has spoken openly about being biracial and sometimes feeling caught between different worlds while trying to find where she truly fit in.

As a child, Meghan described herself as a “latchkey kid” because both of her parents worked long hours. Many afternoons she returned home to an empty house, spending evenings watching television and eating simple microwave dinners. She once recalled that routines like watching Jeopardy! while eating quick meals felt completely normal during her childhood. However, her father has later suggested that some of those memories differ from his perspective, saying he often arranged rides or picked her up himself when work allowed. Despite those differing accounts, Meghan has said the most difficult part of growing up was often dealing with strangers questioning her identity when she was with her mother.

After her parents separated, Meghan spent time with both of them but eventually lived mainly with her father while still remaining close to her mother. During her teenage years she focused heavily on school and described herself as a “big nerd” whose identity was built more around intelligence than appearance. Her determination showed itself early, including when she wrote letters at age eleven protesting a sexist commercial, which eventually helped prompt a change to the advertisement. Small family outings to places like Sizzler were memorable moments because she understood how hard her parents worked to provide them.

Meghan’s connection to the entertainment world began early because her father worked in television production. She sometimes visited the set of the sitcom Married… with Children, which exposed her to the industry long before she considered acting seriously. Later, when she pursued acting professionally, she often faced challenges because casting directors struggled to categorize her appearance. Eventually, her persistence paid off when she gained international recognition for her role as Rachel Zane on the legal drama Suits.

Her life changed dramatically in 2016 when she met Prince Harry, and two years later they married at Windsor Castle in a ceremony watched around the world. The couple later welcomed two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, while continuing to balance family life with public work. Meghan has also spoken openly about personal challenges, including experiencing Postpartum preeclampsia and later a miscarriage. Today her story continues to evolve, shaped by experiences that began long before she became one of the most recognized public figures in the world.
