Why You Should NEVER Sleep with Your Phone Under the Pillow

Like millions of other teenagers, 16-year-old David had a habit of scrolling through his social media feeds until the very moment his eyes closed for sleep. His phone was his constant companion, and he felt uncomfortable if it wasn’t within arm’s reach at all times, even during the night.
To ensure his battery was full for the next school day, David would plug his phone into the charger and tuck it neatly under his pillow. He liked having it there so he could hear his alarm clearly and check his messages the second he woke up in the morning.
One Tuesday night, David fell into a deep sleep, unaware that his heavy feather pillow was acting like a thick thermal insulator for the charging device. Without the ability to circulate air and dissipate heat, the phone’s lithium-ion battery began to reach temperatures far beyond its safety limits.
Deep inside the device, a chemical reaction known as “thermal runaway” began to take place, causing the battery casing to swell and eventually crack. The trapped heat had nowhere to go, and within seconds, the phone’s screen shattered as a jet of white-hot flame shot out into the fabric of the pillow.
David woke up to the smell of acrid smoke and a searing pain on the side of his face, finding his bed engulfed in a rapidly spreading fire. He managed to jump out of bed and scream for his parents, but the toxic fumes from the burning plastic were already making him dizzy and confused.
The family managed to escape the house just before the fire reached the hallway, but David suffered second-degree burns on his cheek and ear. Firefighters who arrived at the scene noted that if he had slept just ten minutes longer, the smoke would have rendered him unconscious forever.
Tech experts and fire marshals are now using David’s story as a chilling reminder: never, under any circumstances, charge your phone on a soft surface like a bed or a sofa. Electronics need ventilation to stay cool, and a pillow can turn a simple smartphone into a deadly incendiary device in less than an hour.
