Study Finds Possible Presence of “Forever Chemicals” in Some Pet Foods 🐾

A recent scientific study has highlighted the possible presence of PFAS, often called “forever chemicals,” in some commercial pet foods. These chemicals are known for their durability and ability to remain in the environment for long periods of time.
Researchers analyzed 100 popular pet food products sold in Japan. The items included brands manufactured in several regions, including the United States, Europe, Australia, and China, providing a broad overview of the international pet food market.
The study detected varying trace levels of PFAS in a number of the tested products. Although the amounts differed between brands and formulas, the findings suggest that these long-lasting environmental chemicals may be present in certain types of pet food.
According to the research, fish-based recipes and some grain-based formulas occasionally showed higher concentrations of PFAS compared to other types of pet food. Scientists believe this could be linked to how these ingredients interact with environmental contamination.
Wet pet foods often showed lower PFAS levels per gram compared with some dry products. Researchers noted that differences in ingredients, processing, and packaging might influence the concentrations detected in various products.
Scientists emphasize that PFAS are already widespread in the environment because they resist heat, grease, and water. This resistance is what has made them widely used in many industrial and consumer products for decades.
Experts say more research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of PFAS exposure on pets. Continued monitoring and clearer safety standards will be important as scientists study how these substances move through the food chain and potentially affect animal health.
