Former Iran Goalkeeper Rashid Mazaheri Reportedly Missing After Criticizing Khamenei

The whereabouts of former Iran national team goalkeeper Rashid Mazaheri remain unknown days after he publicly criticized Iran’s late Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei.
According to reports by Iran Insight and IranWire, the 36-year-old former Zob Ahan star posted a strong statement mourning citizens executed under Khamenei’s rule. In his message, Mazaheri declared that the era of Khamenei had come to an end and described him as a “symbol of the gallows.”
He wrote:
“Khamenei, know this: your rule over this land has reached its end. The wall of fear has collapsed, and from the ruins of tyranny, Iran has risen tall.
We haven’t watched football, wrestling, or any sport for a long time as long as our honorable athletes are in solitary confinement and under torture by the terrorist regime in Iran.”
Mazaheri also referenced historic Persian figures such as Kaveh, Cyrus, and Darius, contrasting Iran’s ancient heritage with what he described as present-day oppression.
Wife Speaks Out
Hours after the post was published, IranWire reported that security agents allegedly raided Mazaheri’s home and took him away in front of his wife.
His wife, Maryam Abdollahi, said she has not been able to contact him since. She warned that his life could be in danger and placed responsibility for his safety on the Iranian authorities.
In an emotional statement, she said:
“The responsibility for my husband’s safety, given all the risks he has bravely taken while remaining in his homeland, lies directly with the government.
Rashid is not afraid of shadows. He has chosen, as a father and a husband, not to remain silent in the face of injustice.
His life is in danger, but his honor is safe. Let the world know that he has stood up for his conscience.”
IRGC Responds
Meanwhile, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that a summons had been issued for the footballer over an alleged 4-billion-toman (approximately $80,000) debt. Authorities reportedly accused him of exploiting the country’s political climate and fabricating claims to avoid financial obligations.
As of now, Mazaheri’s exact location remains unclear, and no official confirmation has been provided regarding his condition. The situation continues to generate concern among supporters and observers both inside and outside Iran.
