Puerto Vallarta Under Siege After Mexican Army Kills Cartel Leader

The resort city of Puerto Vallarta was rocked by violence and unrest after Mexican security forces confirmed the killing of one of the country’s most powerful cartel leaders. The incident triggered panic among residents and tourists, with reports of gunfire and road blockades spreading across parts of the region.

According to authorities, the operation was carried out by the Mexican Army in the mountainous area of Tapalpa. During the raid, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — widely known as Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes — was killed. He had long been considered one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and internationally.

Oseguera was the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a powerful criminal organization known for its military-style tactics and extensive control across multiple Mexican states. The cartel has been linked to drug trafficking, extortion, kidnappings, and violent clashes with rival groups and government forces.

Following confirmation of his death, armed individuals allegedly set up barricades, torched vehicles, and blocked major highways in parts of Jalisco state. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in areas surrounding Puerto Vallarta, prompting businesses to temporarily shut down and residents to shelter indoors.

Puerto Vallarta’s international airport operated under heightened security measures, with some flights reportedly delayed due to safety concerns. Local authorities urged the public to remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel while security operations continued.

Federal officials stated that the operation was part of a broader strategy to combat organized crime and reaffirmed their commitment to restoring order. Additional security forces were deployed to tourist zones to prevent further escalation.

Experts warn that the killing of such a high-profile cartel leader could destabilize the criminal landscape in the region. Power struggles within the cartel or retaliation attacks could lead to a temporary spike in violence as rival factions seek to assert control.
