Experts Issue Urgent Warning: Keep Your Windows Closed for the Next Four Weeks

As temperatures rise and weather patterns shift, pest control experts across the country are urging residents to take precautions: keep windows securely closed — both day and night — over the next few weeks. The reason? A noticeable increase in spiders entering homes in search of warmth, food, and suitable nesting spots.

According to entomologists, this seasonal movement is linked to mating cycles and environmental changes that drive certain spider species — including the false widow — closer to human dwellings. These spiders can slip inside through small gaps in windows, vents, and doors, especially at dusk when they are most active.

“They’re not looking to attack people,” one pest control specialist explained. “They’re simply searching for dark, undisturbed spaces. Homes with open windows provide easy access. Once inside, they may hide behind curtains, under furniture, or in piles of clothing.”

In recent days, there has also been an uptick in reported spider bites. Most cases are mild, but some have involved significant swelling or allergic reactions requiring medical attention. Experts emphasize that prevention is the most effective approach during this period.

To reduce the risk, specialists recommend keeping windows and vents closed at night, inspecting areas behind furniture, and shaking out clothes and shoes before use. Natural repellents such as peppermint oil or citrus placed near windowsills may also help deter spiders.

While this advisory is temporary, experts say it’s important to remain vigilant. As temperatures stabilize, spider activity is expected to decrease. Until then, a few simple precautions can help prevent unwanted encounters indoors.
